When I was a young boy growing up my father often related the following story told to him by his Pa.
When Columbus sailed to America, there were really four ships not three. The fourth ship, the "Santa Lucia" was utilized to carry supplies and animals to feed Columbus’ troops on the other three ships (the Nina, the Pinta and the Santa Maria).
However, the Santa Lucia traveled off course and ran aground off the coast of Georgia and sank. The pigs on board swam to shore and were corralled by a group of Indians from the local "Barbakay" tribe. That night a tree next to the coral was struck by lightening, caught on fire and fell amongst the pigs.
The pigs were cooked; the Indians ran out and tried to put the fire out by throwing the soup they had been drinking on the flames.
Ironically, the cooked Pig Meat became the very first Barbecue (named after the tribe) and the soup became the very first Barbecue Sauce.
Now you know why, here at Brothers Ribs we serve barbecue on all the great holidays instead of turkey.
